Six sites with diverse agricultural conditions were selected for the initial phase of the project and trials were started at each of these sites in 2007.

Phandulwazi Farm   Crops include

Phandulwazi farm is 260 hectares in extent and is located in the upper Thyume river valley on the way to Hogsback where the project's headquarters are located. The Company is cultivating a diverse range of essential oil crops on 14.5 hectares of the farm. The project's steam distillation unit is located at the farm so it is close the the plants that need to be distilled. An experiential learning arrangement to expose selected learners at the school on the farm to essential oils farming is being encouraged by the Company with the education staff.

Mazotshweni   Crops include

At Mazotshweni below the Binfield dam wall on the Thyume river the Company installed a sprinkler irrigation system and prepared and planted 5 hectares of land leased from the Mabandla brothers who have title to the land. This site has been developed to demonstrate how such agriculture is done and to inspire people in the surrounding areas to consider joining in the essential oils initiative as outgrowers and service providers.

Fort Hare Alice farm nursery   Crops include

The Company has partnered with the University and secured a long term lease to use the facility for its expansion of propagation activities. It has established a production nursery producing commercial volumes of rooted plants in trays (speedlings) to meet its cultivation expansion targets. A post graduate student doing her Masters in agriculture has joined the nursery activities to help the Company improve its propagation operations through researching critical aspects like the best mediums to use, temperature control, irrigation requirements and other important variables.

Fort Cox College of Agriculture and Forestry farm   Crops include

The Company has partnered with the College to cultivate up to 80 hectares of essential oil crops over the next 10 years on the farm, set up a distillation unit and establish a value adding facility. Essential oil farming experiential learner ships for selected students are being developed to generate the interest and skills required to build an industry is beginning at the College.

Currently the Company has 7 hectares under cultivation of the crops listed.

Hogsback    

The headquarters of the project is in Hogsback village on a small holding. The Company office, Community Trust office and Cooperative support centre are located in one complex there together with the research and development nursery, mother blocks of parent plants and the teaching, training facilities and demonstration areas.
